We've created this team because we want to raise money and make a difference.
We are mums to two superheroes diagnosed with Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) over the years we have built our own special team/family based on love, friendship, support and understanding. We are doing this in honour of our wee team mate Keira who passed away in October 2019.
MMA children are unable to breakdown protein and as a result get a build up of acid in their blood and are at risk of metabolic decompensation at times of illness and stress. MMA causes a lot of issues including kidney disease, developmental delay, low muscle tone, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Both our kids have spent a huge amount of time in hospital and have been supported by Ronald McDonald house.
James (8 years) was diagnosed when he became critically ill as a newborn. He spent 5 weeks in Starship hospital. We have had our ups and downs over the years. James has some brain damage caused during his initial decompensation and goes through phases of needing to be tube fed when he is unwell and we have a few hospital stays each year. Overall he is doing very well.
Keira (forever 8 years) was also diagnosed as a newborn. She bravely battled as long as she could through her MMA and all the damage it did to her body. Over her short life she had many trips to Starship for clinics and when she was very unwell. She is a very much loved and missed member of our team and taught us all so much.
As a team we would love to take this opportunity to give back to RMH as they have been a huge support to us over the years.
