Dunedin Half Marathon for Ronald McDonald House Charities

By Leigh Alderson

I'm fundraising for Ronald McDonald House!

Kia ora friends and whanau,

Its coming up to the annual half marathon time to raise funds for my favourite charity, Ronald McDonald House.

This year I have signed up for the Dunedin Half Marathon on the 10th of September. This will be my third half marathon for RMHC, and I am hoping to break a fundraising record of $3000, which will bring my total funds raised in the past few years to $10,000.

Since moving to Queenstown I have seen how important RMHC is to seriously ill children and their families. Not only do they provide accommodation to families, free of charge, so they can stay close to their child in hospital, but they provide food, necessities and support through what can be an incredibly stressful and difficult time. During my few years volunteering I worked in the family room in Starship Hospital, where there is short term accommodation for families who need to be in the hospital, and meals provided for family and visitors. We also provided a space to get out of the hospital room for the kids to play, chat with others who understand what they are going through and to have a warm drink and someone to talk to on those tough days. We also ran events at the houses for special occasions, decorating for Christmas and playing elves for the annual party.

RMHC work hard to make life a little bit easier for seriously ill children and their families, so they can focus on their child in their time of need.

Any support as I gear up for the marathon, whether it be a donation or in spreading the word, would be hugely appreciated. I will keep everyone updated on progress in the lead up!

Ngā mihi
